Math It Helper (Advanced)

You likely already know about our Math It Helper, it's pretty useful for simple addition, subtraction, multiplication & division within one custom field… but what's that Advance option, how do you use it and where would you use it?

Let start with the first question and most asked on the help desk regarding the Math It Helper,

What is the “Advanced” feature?

That's pretty simple to explain, the advance feature lets you create math equations that span multiple custom fields. So you can do much more advanced calculations and logic that involve many different fields. In fact, this is exactly how we calculate the RFM score in our RFM campaigns. The sky's the limit, if you can think it, you can create it!

Now here's what almost everybody on the help desk asks right after we explain what the advanced feature is…

How do I use the “Advanced” feature?

First off you need to create a Math It Helper, select the advanced option and click create helper and you're pretty much done! No, we didn't forget a step. The actual formula for this approach is not done within the helper itself but rather as an additional parameter within Infusionsoft.

After you've created your Advanced Math It Helper, you'll need to add it to an HTTP Post like any other helper… but the catch is you need to add a new parameter for that to work.

Don't worry, even if you don't know what a Parameter is we'll walk you thru it!

When you paste your Math It Helper link inside the HTTP Post, you'll need to click this plus button to add a new Parameter:

Then you'll need to Name the Parameter and add a value to the parameter you just created:

NOTE: This process is case sensitive so please be careful from here on out!

Value Pairs:

2016-10-01_16152016-10-01_1615The only thing that will NEVER change with this parameter is the Name will always be equation and how you add in your equation in the value field… always add your equations within parentheses. You can have parentheses within parentheses (math logic, yeah, you've got to back to 7th grade here, lol) but you must have at least 1 parentheses around your equation and you can't have spaces anywhere in the equation.

Good equation:

Bad equation:

( ~Contact._Number1~ / ~Contact._Number2~ )

Now you can get pretty complex with these, add, subtract, multiply, divide custom fields, add number then subtract it from a custom field, you can get as complex as you need it to be (as long as you're following math logic). The big “gotchas” you need to avoid are to make sure there are no spaces and to make sure everything is properly enclosed within parentheses.

We DO NOT limit you on what equation you can add in there, if there's a working equation in there, then there's a working Math It Helper and a happy you 😉!

Math the Heck Outta Infusionsoft!

We've showed you WHAT the advanced feature is and HOW to use it but the WHERE you would use it's pretty much to you!
